Boston Celebrates Knitting With Free Event On Boston Common Knit-Out & Crochet 2004, September 12, Noon- 4 p.m.

BOSTON, MA September 9, 2004 -- Knitters and crocheters who jumped on the yarn train two years ago at South Station will have a chance to take another trip. Local yarn enthusiasts announced today that after a one-year hiatus, Knit-Out & Crochet 2004 will be held at the Gazebo on the Boston Common on September 12, 2004 from noon to 4 p.m.

A Knit-Out is a free, non-selling event designed to spread enthusiasm for knitting and crocheting. The Boston festival will feature complimentary lessons for anyone interested in picking up needles or a hook, a fashion show of works created by local knitters and crocheters, a Kids' Korner, demonstrations, exhibits, contests and entertainment. Nationally recognized designers also will be on hand to converse and sign books and patterns.

Approximately two thousand knitters and crocheters crammed into the 2002 event. Since that event people have become increasingly aware of the health benefits and communal ties associated with knitting, and this year organizers chose the vast venue offered at the Common in order to accommodate an ever-growing number of devotees and people seeking their first introduction to creating with yarn.

"Knitting is not only fun but also a great, portable way to unwind and relax." says Susan Baker, owner of Windsor Button on Temple Place and co-chair of this year's event. "The yarn industry sees Knit-Outs as a way to introduce people to the social and therapeutic sides of this creative art while providing current yarn crafters with the always welcomed opportunity to socialize with other aficionados."

Fourteen yarn shops and six yarn companies from across New England are sponsoring the event and will exhibit products throughout the afternoon. Teachers from participating businesses will hold demonstrations. Yarn spinning, finishing techniques, four-needle, two-needle and magic loop sock knitting are just a few that are currently scheduled

For the competitive at heart, there will be three contests to enter: "Fastest Needles in Boston," "Fastest Hook in Boston" and "Best Bag in Show." For the less competitive there will be door prizes, and knitters and crocheters of all levels are encouraged to bring their favorite projects to the Show n'Share.

Wren Ross, a local actor and singer, will perform her lively cabaret "Singing With Every Fiber!" In addition to performing at fiber-related festivals across the United States, Ross is a designer and teaches workshops titled "Telling Your Story/Wearing Your Story" in which students use personal iconography to design garments that tell stories. Her work has been featured in Interweave Knits magazine and Ultimate Knitting.

"It is very satisfying to see the pleasure that people derive from working with yarn" says Judith Shangold, organizer of Knit-Out & Crochet 2002, local designer and owner of Design Source, Inc, a corporate sponsor of this year's event. "The excitement at knit-outs is contagious. It is a great way to introduce people to a new skill and the resources in their area for products and classes."

The Knit-Out concept originated with the Craft Yarn Council of America seven years ago. Last year Knit-Outs were held in 90 cities across the country, including New York and Los Angeles.
